Airline creates new jobs at Manchester airport

13th November 2008

Regional airline Jet2.com is creating 25 new jobs at Manchester airport as it continues to expand.

The airline, which has its headquarters at Leeds Bradford airport and offers flights from six airports in the UK, is basing another 225 seat Boeing 757 at Manchester airport to meet what it describes as “growing demand”.

This is the fourth 757 Jet2.com has based at Manchester and the plane will be used to increase capacity on the airline's newly launched flights to Dalaman in Turkey as well as on the service to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt.

An extra Friday flight has been added on the Manchester to Dalaman route, plus an additional Saturday service from Manchester to Tenerife. Flights to the diving hotspot of Sharm el Sheikh have been extended until the end of summer 2009.

Jet2.com says the new aircraft at Manchester will also help fill the void left by the demise of XL Airways, particularly on the routes to Tenerife and Heraklion in Crete.

“At a time when many competitors are cutting back services and reducing capacity, we are increasing ours, not just taking advantage of gaps left by others, but expanding the capacity on our own popular routes,” says Jet2.com boss, Philip Meeson.

“For example, since we launched Tenerife and Heraklion in Crete, sales have been so strong that we are putting on larger 757 aircraft to meet demand,” continues Meeson.

Jet2.com now has six aircraft based at Manchester airport, with two Boeing 737s in addition to the 757s. The airline also offers flights from Newcastle, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Blackpool and Belfast International airports.

Sister company Jet2holidays.com has announced a new sun destination from Manchester, the popular Greek island of Crete. Holidays start from £244 per person for 7 nights self-catering in a 3 star apartment.

Jet2.com was recently voted the UK's best short-haul airline by readers of the Guardian and Observer for the third year in succession. The airline has also announced an increase in its hold baggage allowance from 17kg to 22kg, which it claims is the most generous allowance in the leisure airline sector.
