Busy holidaymakers are turning to home-working travel agents to book their breaks | | 12th July 2008 | Hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers are turning to home-working travel agents to book their trips, because they do not have the time or inclination to visit a high-street retailer or trawl the internet for cheap deals.
Home-workers operate flexible hours and are prepared to visit people at work or at home, or deal with them over the phone. They are often former travel agents who have worked in shops, and are particularly popular among busy executives because they are prepared to see their clients at a time that suits them.
New research from Bolton-based Travel Counsellors, the country's biggest home-working company with 750 sales consultants in Britain and Ireland, shows that it booked 183,838 Britons on trips in the 12 months up to June 30, up six per cent on the same period last year. The average booking was worth £1,742.
Hays Travel has 350 home-workers, mainly serving customers in the North-East. John Hays, the proprietor, said: "We've seen a huge growth in the number of people using our agents. Typically, they will be high-spending individuals who want a relationship with a consultant, someone who has time to talk to them and really get to know what they want from a holiday.
