Drunk Brits In Emergency Landing

25th July 2008

A plane has been forced to make an emergency landing in Frankfurt after two drunk British women tried to open a cabin door at 30,000ft.

The women, aged 26 and 27, became violent towards cabin staff during the XL Airways charter flight from Kos in Greece to Manchester.

They had to be held in their seats until the plane landed and were then arrested by German police.

A spokesman for the Frankfurt force said the 26-year-old woman repeatedly tried to hit a flight attendant with a vodka bottle after she was refused alcohol.

"She evidently wanted to get some fresh air and tried to open the door, which obviously did not work," he added.

"Both the women drunk a lot of alcohol on the plane and it was a risk because they made some trouble.

"The captain thought it was better to make an unscheduled stop in Frankfurt and get them off the plane.

"They wanted to open a door in the plane but that was not possible and someone from the security held them in their seats until the landing."

The women were questioned by police but were later released and allowed to return to the UK.

Police are deciding whether to press charges including grievous bodily harm and violating air traffic regulations.

The plane flew on to Manchester with a two-hour delay.

It was reported last month that an XL Airways flight from Glasgow to Dalaman, Turkey, had to turn back to Scotland after a fight between two drunken passengers.

XL Airways flies to 50 destinations from 12 UK airports.
