Rising oil prices are forcing cruise passengers to pay surcharges of up to £19 per night, reports Ph | | 11th July 2008 |
Cruise passengers face additional costs of as much as £19 per night as lines increase fuel supplements to counteract rocketing oil prices.
Fred Olsen Cruise Lines yesterday raised its fuel surcharge for all new bookings on departures until April 16, 2009. It was the fifth increase in the surcharge since December.
The first two people in a cabin will now pay an additional £6 per person, per night with a cap of £120 per person. The third and fourth occupants of the cabin will pay £2.50 per person, per night with a cap of £50 per person.
Other cruise companies with surcharges include Norwegian Cruise Line (£5.50 per person, per night), P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises (both £4.50), Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises (both £4). Voyages of Discovery has the highest surcharge, at £19.15 per person, per night.
David Yellow, the line's managing director, said: "Unfortunately we were unable to anticipate the massive escalation in fuel costs when setting our prices for 2008. For our summer 2009 programme, we are offering passengers who book early a 'no-surcharge guarantee' so that they are better able to plan their holiday expenditure."
