St Catherine's Monastery is reputedly built on the biblical site where Moses heard God speaking to him through a burning bush, on his way to receive the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. A bush grows outside the church, though it is a matter of some speculation whether this is the original one, and high walls and lush gardens surround the Monastery. There's one of the greatest collections of icons in the world, covering 1400 years of art.
Mount Sinai is a spectacular, craggy mountain rising above St Catherine's Monastery. There are two routes to the top: the camel path is a 3-4 hour walk, or you can rent a camel, whilst the Path of our Lord Moses follows a set of steps, some a metre high, which were hacked out of the rock by a penitent monk. There are 3750 steps which take about an hour and a half to climb, buy your leg muscles may take longer to recover!
